ABOUT

J. J. Augustin is a name steeped in publishing history, with roots reaching back to 16th-century Germany. Founded as a printing house by Andreas Koch and acquired by the Augustin family in 1775, the company soon distinguished itself as a premier publisher of art books and prints. By the 20th century, J. J. Augustin had established a reputation for cultural and artistic excellence—one that expanded across the Atlantic in 1936, when Johannes Jakob Augustin opened an American branch near Union Square in New York. This new venture became a crucial conduit for artists and intellectuals, introducing American audiences to European avant-garde art and photography.

Today, J. J. Augustin is relaunching with a renewed commitment to the highest standards in art publishing. Honoring its rich legacy, the imprint is now organized into three distinct lines: J. J. Augustin Books, focusing on museum-quality monographs and critical investigation; Augustin Editions, offering limited-run artist books and experimental formats; and Augustin Journals, dedicated to fostering ongoing cultural discourse through periodicals.

With a steadfast dedication to craftsmanship, intellectual rigor, and visual excellence, J. J. Augustin seeks once again to serve as a vital meeting point for creative expression, cultural dialogue, and discerning readers—celebrating the past while shaping the future of art publishing.
